Letter to the Editor: In his October 21st column, Frank Denton, Editor [Jacksonville Times Union], opined that it doesn’t matter very much whether Mitt Romney or Barack Obama wins the election. He says “Whoever wins the White House, the republic will survive, freedom will prevail, people will not die in the streets, and we will find ways to address our big national problems.” He bases this on the premise that both candidates “believe in our way of life, our values, and our freedom.” I disagree.
As a practicing Roman Catholic, I take issue with Mr. Denton’s premise. Barack Obama does not share my way of life, values, or freedom. In my view, the moral fabric of America is eroding under President Obama. In contrast to Catholic doctrine and my religious values, Mr. Obama supports abortion, same sex marriage, and embryonic stem cell research; he refuses to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act which defines marriage as between one man and one woman; and he violates religious freedom by mandating, through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), that religious organizations must provide birth control and abortifacients even against their conscience. That is why I will vote for Mitt Romney.
