Mauricio Claver-Carone Was Appointed to the Transition Team

On November 21, 2016, President-elect Donald J. Trump named Mauricio Claver-Carone, Executive Director of Cuba Democracy Advocates in Washington, D.C. one of the most active organizations that supports the United States commercial embargo to Cuba, to his transition team. Claver-Carone has been one of the strongest critics of President Barack Obama’s diplomatic recognition and the series of unilateral concessions to the bloody Cuban regime. His appointment to the Trump Transition team is a clear indication that President-elect Trump is prepared to reverse Obama’s Cuban policy.

Mauricio Claver-Carone is the Executive Director of Cuba Democracy Advocates in Washington, D.C., which is a non-partisan organization that advocates the promotion of a transition in the Cuban oppressive regime towards democracy, respect for human and civil rights, and the rule of law. He is editor of the blog Capitol Hill Cubans and serves on the Board of Directors of the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC. This PAC is the largest foreign-policy political action committee in the United States and the largest Hispanic political action committee in history.

Mauricio Claver-Carone was born in Florida and raised in Madrid, Spain. Claver-Carone earned his B.A. degree magna cum laude from Rollins College, J.D. and also from the Catholic University of America and LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center.

Claver-Carone served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law and as an Adjunct professor at the George Washington University Law School. Later, he served as an attorney-advisor for the Department of the Treasury.

Mauricio Claver-Carone is host of the foreign policy show “From Washington Al Mundo” on Sirius-XM’s Cristina Radio on Channel 146.

Poder Magazine recognized Claver-Carone as one of 20 entrepreneurs, executives, leaders and artists under 40 who are shaping the future of the United States and the world. He writes regularly for the Huffington Post and has been published in the Wall Street Journal, and the World Affairs Journal. Claver-Carone has written many articles in support of the United States embargo against Cuba and in favor of a transition on the island. He has taken part in televised debates on United States-Cuba relations.

Nora Gámez Torres wrote an article titled “Trump adds Cuba embargo supporter to transition team” which was published in the Miami Herald on November 22, 2016. She explained that the newspaper Washington Examiner reported that Claver-Carone was named to the Transition team for the Department of the Treasury, where he was an attorney-adviser until November of 2003.

Gámez Torres pointed out that President-elect Donald J. Trump said during the campaign that he would have negotiated a better deal with Cuba than Obama. Former U.S. ambassador to Venezuela Otto Reich told the Nuevo Herald that Claver-Carone’s appointment to the Transition team “is a clear signal … that the president-elect will carry out the promise he made to the Cuban American community.” Reich added that “In my opinion, not many other people know as much about Obama’s mistakes on Cuba policy, and how to change them, as Mauricio.” Claver-Carone argued in an opinion column published recently in the Miami Herald that Obama’s new policies on Cuba “made a bad situation worse.” U.S. policy on the island “has gone from what it initially portrayed as a noble purpose to pure sycophancy in pursuit of ‘historic firsts.

Gámez Torres explained that Mauricio Claver-Carone writes comments regularly on Cuba issues on his blog, Capitol Hill Cubans, and has a radio program on U.S. foreign policy. He testified before a Congressional committee in March 2016 about Obama’s Cuba policies. Claver-Carone has been especially critical of the Obama administration’s approval of several United States companies to do business with companies owned by the Cuban government and its military — as in the case of Starwood hotels. He has also denounced the lack of compensation for properties confiscated from U.S. citizens in the 1960s.

Gámez Torres wrote that the U.S.-Cuba Democracy PAC, where Claver-Carone serves on the Board of Directors, spent more than $600,000 in the most recent elections, according to Federal Electoral Commission records. This PAC gave significant donations to the campaigns of Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Carlos Curbelo, as well as Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz – all elected leaders who have criticized Obama’s policies with the Cuban regime.

Donald J. Trump criticized Obama’s policies towards Cuba during his campaign

On August 6, 2016, Donald J. Trump spoke in Texas and said that if elected president he was going to impose severe economic sanctions to the Cuban regime unless the Castro brothers would conduct a democratic election in the island. Similar statements were said by the Republican candidate at the James Knight Center in Miami and other places.

El candidato presidencial republicano Donald Trump da un discurso en la sede de la Brigada 2506, en el barrio de la Pequeña Habana, en Miami, Florida.

Donald J. Trump spoke on his desire for a free democratic Cuba at the Museum and Library of the Bay of Pigs Veteran Association Brigade 2506 in Miami.

On October 25, 2016, Donald J. Trump met with a group of veterans of the Bay of Pigs who invaded Cuba in 1961, including this writer, soon after their Association endorsed him for president. It was the first time that the Brigade 2506 Veteran Association had endorsed a candidate for president in 55 years. Mr. Trump thanked the veterans for their endorsement and praised them for their fight over many years for the freedom of Cuba calling them heroes. He said the Assault Brigade 2506 members were “true fighters for freedom and were committed in defense of human rights and justice.” Mr. Trump also praised the Ladies in White who are frequently beaten and arrested in Cuba each time they walk to churches in Cuba. He denounced Hillary Clinton as well as President Obama for shutting their eyes to the human rights violations in Cuba. Mr.Trump said that President Obama has done a terrible deal with Cuba and if Hillary Clinton would have been elected she would done one even worst.

The appointment of Mauricio Claver-Carone to the Transition team by Donald J. Trump is a very positive signal that the president-elect will reverse Obama’s disastrous Cuban policies. Claver-Carone has been one of the strongest critics of President Barack Obama’s diplomatic recognition of Cuba and the series of unilateral concessions to the bloody Cuban regime.

The bloody Castro regime has increased the numbers of arbitrary arrests since Obama normalized relations with Cuba. There has been no progress in regards to human and civil rights on the Castro brothers’ island-prison nor have conditions in Cuba improved since this administration began providing the regime with unilateral concession after concession.

President Obama has ignored the fact that the Cuban regime continues to engage in human trafficking, supports terrorists organizations, maintains an occupation army in Venezuela, and assist all America’s enemies. After Obama took Cuba off the list of state sponsors of terror, the then-Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, showed that she knew Cuba had permitted the opening of an operational Hezbollah base on the island. Obama also ignored how the Castro regime transported Cuban Migs aircraft and tons of weapons through the Panama Canal on their way to North Korea and another suspicious shipment to Colombia and likely its FARC guerrillas. There was also the suspicious shipment of a U.S. Hellfire missile to Havana. Cuba returned it two years after it received the supposedly misdirected package.

Obama’s trip to Cuba was another gift to the Cuban communist regime which has assassinated over 17,000 children, women, and men; imprisoned over 300,000; and forced over two million to leave the country of their birth with an estimate of 100,000 drowning or being devoured by sharks when trying to escape the island-prison. This writer and many other Cuban American anti-communists and many opponents in the Island knew that Obama’s new policy on Cuba was a failure because the mafia who rules Cuba is not going to change. The repression in Cuba continues.

The bloody regime only wants money from tens of thousands of American tourists and U.S. investments to perpetuate itself in power. Sadly, Obama has given oxygen to the Cuban regime so that it may continue to oppress the Cuban people. Perhaps Obama’s policies may assist U.S. multinationals that want to use the labor of Cuban workers, who make $20 a month, to increase the profits of their future factories in that island. The multinationals from United States and from other countries want to make Cuba the China of the Caribbean. They do not care about freeing the Cubans who suffer. They only care about increasing their profits.

The many people who pushed for diplomatic recognition and to end what is left of the embargo to help the rogue communist regime, which has established the worst and longest dictatorship in the Western Hemisphere, as well as President Obama and Pope Francis, are responsible for what is occurring on the Island today. Shame on all of these individuals who have provided assistance and encouragement to Barack Obama for normalizing relations with Cuba, a person who has always admired the Castro brothers together with his preacher of 20 years Jeremiah Wright.

Barack Hussein Obama’s legacy is one of appeasement to bloody the dictators in Cuba and elsewhere in the world. He has made the United States a superpower in retreat. Our allies do not respect him and even worse our enemies do not fear him. Obama is omnipotent in the United States but impotent with our enemies. Obama will go down in history as the worst president in history and the only one who hated the nation that elected him. He is the architect of the destruction of the United States!

Cuban Americans are very encouraged that the Trump administration will reverse the shameful unilateral concessions with no Quid Pro Quo or nothing in return made by Obama. President-elect Donald J. Trump needs to enforce the Helms Burton Law which requires that Cuba releases all political prisoners, allows a free media and the formation of political parties, restores human and civil rights, and holds fair and transparent international supervised elections before the embargo is lifted.

If President-elect would like to end the communist dictatorships in Cuba and Venezuela, all that he needs is to demand that Venezuela allows transperent and international supervised elections. If the regime fails to do it, then the United States needs to stop purchasing oil from Venezuela. The Keystone XL pipe once it is built will bring the same amount of oil that this nation buys from the oppressive Venezuelan regime. Such an action will bankrupt the narco terrorist regime of Nicolás Maduro and bring regime change. Cuba will collapse soon after as Venezuela provides the Castro regime with free oil. Such a bold move will bring enormous criticism to the Trump administration from communists, socialists, and radicals in the United States and abroad. Both Cuba and Venezuela are helping Islamic radicals and rogue regimes in Iran and other U.S. enemies.

If this policy succeeds and democracy is restored in Venezuela and Cuba, President Trump will be hailed as a hero of the Western Hemisphere.
