Fox News host Bret Baier interviewed ill-prepared former White House national security spokesman Tommy Vietor on Thursday.
The interview covered the release of an email that appears to confirm that the White House manipulated the narrative in response to the attack in Benghazi, with convenient amnesia coming to Vietor’s rescue on more than one occasion.
At one point, Baier asked Vietor if he changed “attacks” to “demonstrations” in the White House talking points.
“Maybe, I don’t really remember,” Vietor said.
“You don’t remember?” Baier asked
“Dude, this was like two years ago,” Vietor countered.
“Dude, it is the thing that everybody’s talking about!” Baier fired back.
There was also another interesting exchange, when Vietor acknowledged that President Barack Obama never came to the White House situation room during the Benghazi attack:
Vietor: I was in the Situation Room that night. Ok. And we didn’t know where the ambassador was. Definitively.
Baier: Was the president in the Situation Room?
Vietor: No…
Baier: Where was the president.
Vietor: In the White House.
Baier: He wasn’t in the Situation Room.
Vietor: Uhh. At what point in the evening. He was constantly… It’s well known that when the attack was first briefed to him it was in the Oval Office. And he was updated constantly…
Baier: So then, when Hillary Clinton talks to him by phone at 10 p.m., he’s where?
Vietor: I don’t know. I don’t have a tracking device on him in the residence.
Baier: But you were in the Situation Room and he wasn’t there.
Vietor: Yes.
Watching the exchange, it seems the email in question, which Vietor insists “tells us nothing new,” has the White House and its allies in full damage control mode. Imagine the scenario if someone other than Fox News was reporting on it.
