âWell, looking at the information, what would it have solved?â Babeu asked.
Babeu continued, âThe executive actions that you mentioned earlier ⌠they are not written about in the Constitution. I want to know and I think all of us really want to get to the solution: What would you have done to prevent these mass shootings and the terrorist attack? And how do we get those with mental illness and criminals â thatâs the real problem here â to follow the laws?â
âThe executive actions that you mentioned earlier ⌠they are not written about in the Constitution.â
Obama responded saying that he thinks âitâs really important for us not to suggest that if we canât solve every crime we shouldnât try to solve any crimes.â
âThe problem when we talk about that guns kill people, people kill people. Or itâs primarily a mental health problem. Or itâs a criminal and evil problem. And thatâs what we have to get at. All of us are interested in fighting crime. ⌠Thatâs a huge priority to us,â the president told Babeu.
âThe challenge we have is that in many instances you donât know ahead of time who is going to be the criminal. Itâs not as if criminals walk around with a label that says, âIâm a criminal,ââ Obama added. âAnd by the way, the young man who killed those kids in Newtown â he didnât have a criminal record. ⌠But he was able to have access to an arsenal that allowed him in very short order to kill a classroom of small children.â
The president concluded, âAnd so the question then becomes, are there ways for us, since we canât identify that person all the time, are there ways for us to make it less lethal when something like that happens?â
During the town hall, Obama noted that he has never owned a firearm. He was also confronted by a rape survivor and âAmerican Sniperâ widow Taya Kyle who both challenged him on his gun control position.
