DALLAS, Texas — Sen. Ted Cruz is projected to win the Texas Republican primary, but it’s unlikely that he’ll notch the 50 percent support needed to win all of the state’s 155 delegates.
Businessman and front-runner Donald Trump has already had a good night and is poised to sweep through many of the Super Tuesday states. The businessman and 2016 contender won Tennessee, Massachusetts, Alabama, Virginia and Georgia.
Cruz had 39.1 percent of the vote, compared to Trump’s 28.2 percent with 1.6 percent reporting, according to the Associated Press.
Cruz has staked much of his campaign’s hopes on Texas — though his wife Heidi said this week that no one state is a must-win state for Cruz.
If Cruz doesn’t pass the 50 percent threshold to earn all of Texas’s 155 delegates, the delegates will be awarded proportionately — with a significant chunk of them adding to Trump’s already sizable delegate lead.
But the Texas senator needed a win in his home state, and a big win would have helped him make the case that he can continue mounting a realistic challenge to Trump. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is poised to finish third in many of the Super Tuesday states, making Cruz’s intention to emerge as the primary Trump alternative more difficult.
Cruz also finished first in Oklahoma, with about 34 percent of the vote compared to Trump’s 29.9 percent.
