Reverse Trolling: Pro-Hillary PAC Spends $1M to ‘Correct’ People Online

Correct the Record (CTR), a pro-Hillary Clinton Super PAC, is spending an estimated $1 million on social media comments that are “negative attacks or false narratives” about the presidential hopeful.

Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, Twitter and many other popular site are being targeted by CTR. For example, the group have already corrected 5,000 people on Twitter for spreading incorrect information about Clinton.

The PAC has spent nearly $4.5 million of its $5 million on campaigning and is now focused on the “swarms of anonymous attackers” that are not helping Clinton in the public sphere.

The goal of CTR is to “silence” Clinton haters online for the remainder of the primary and into the general election. This strategy called Barrier Breakers is based on the infamous “Bernie bros”.

According to their website, CTR is hoping that by combating commenters on the internet, the “Barrier Breakers 2016 digital task force will serve as a resource for supporters looking for positive content and push-back to share with their online progressive communities, as well as thanking prominent supporters and committed superdelegates on social media.”

David Brock, supporter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, created CTR as a spinoff from the American Bridge Super PAC. Brock is known for his left-wing Media Matters for America (MMA).

Even though PACs are not supposed to coordinate with electorates, CTR is taking their mission “to debunk conservative misinformation” seriously and quite possibly targeting “random individuals online” which is a tactic never used before during a campaign.

Users of Reddit and Twitter are upset that their forum has been infiltrated with Hillary-billies.

Katie Driscoll tweeted : “@HillaryClinton will not silence the opposition. Her weak record stands for itself. #CorrectThis #CorrectHerRecord”

CTR’s 7 step program for attacking people online is:

  1. Create fake accounts
  2. Establish that they are Bernie supporters by making them tweet about Bernie
  3. Harass journalists and influencers in their @ mentions
  4. Have other elites/influencers quote tweet these fake accounts and say they are hurting Bernie’s brand
  5. Pitch a story to The Atlantic about the phenomenon of “Bernie Bros”
  6. Establish a narrative that Bernie’s supporters are all racist, sexist young males who harass people online.
  7. Make it more difficult for Sanders to expand his coalition by tainting the view of said coalition for women, people of color, and anyone who just doesn’t like online harassment/bullying.

And in case that does not do the trick, CTR will push their internet hounding mission into high gear.
