Anti-Trump Delegates Mount Last Stand at RNC, Say They Have Enough Signatures to Force Unbind Vote

CLEVELAND — Advocates of a delegate unbinding maneuver aimed at unseating Donald Trump as the Republican nominee have put their plan in motion.

A group of anti-Trump delegates are attempting to force a floor vote at the Republican National Convention on an effort to allow states to unbind their delegates, freeing them to vote for a candidate besides Trump.

The anti-Trump group Delegates Unbound says they are collecting signatures to force the roll-call vote, despite the powerful Rules Committee ruling during its committee session today that all due consideration had been given to this effort.

“Despite every obstacle thrown in our way, the movement of all the stakeholders involved in this effort have gained a majority of the delegates in 10 states,” said M. Dane Waters, a co-founder of Delegates Unbound, in a statement.

Regina Thompson, a Colorado delegate and co-founder of the Free the Delegates group, criticized the RNC Rules committeemen for using “disappointing, sluggish tactics.” She said the RNC secretary — who the free-the-delegates have to submit the signatures to — had been “hiding behind armed guards” today, making it difficult to submit the signatures to the appropriate people on time.

“It’s a victory, first of all,” Thompson told TheBlaze Monday afternoon. “We’ll see how they handle it. I have no doubt that they’ll do something to not bring it to a roll call. But we’re still going to soldier on.”

But the effort is still a long shot — even if the group is able to force a floor vote, it won’t be easy get the RNC delegates on the floor to approve the measure.
