President Trump tweeted victoriously the report that Miami-Dade, Florida, was backing off on its “sanctuary city” policies that impede authorities from deporting illegal aliens.

Trump ran under the promise of dismantling “sanctuary city” policies and highlighted the example of Kate Steinle, a young woman who was shot and killed by an illegal alien in San Francisco.
The mayor of Miami-Dade Carlos Gimenez specifically cited Trump’s executive order in his announcement that they would be ending their “sanctuary city” status.
Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense.
The Republican Gimenez said eliminating the sanctuary status was a financial decision made to save taxpayer money. Miami-Dade was officially recognized as a “sanctuary city” by the federal government but they have resisted the label and never declared itself so. Gimenez says he voted for Hillary Clinton but attended the inauguration for Trump.
“Sanctuary cities” have become a flashpoint for controversy as some Democrats have vowed to protect the controversial policies, but Republicans are promising to use whatever power the government has to shut them down.
