President Trump Defends Veterans Against Kneeling Athletes

“They were fighting for our country, they were fighting for our flag.”

The fight over reverence for the National Anthem continued Tuesday, with President Trump maintaining that NFL players who kneel during the hallowed hymn are “disgraceful.”

The song, written during the War of 1812 about a lone flag still waving after an attack on Maryland’s Fort Henry by British forces, champions America’s bravery, perseverence, and virtuous liberty. It has also come to represent those who sacrificed their lives for our country’s continued freedom.

Thus, the President accused players refusing to stand for the anthem of being blatantly insulting to veterans.

“I don’t think you can disrespect our country, our flag, our National Anthem,” Trump stated at a press conference in the Rose Garden.

In defense of his decision to speak out against the protesters, President Trump cited America’s soldiers who have been injured or killed fighting for their homeland.

“They were fighting for our country, they were fighting for our flag, they were fighting for our National Anthem,” the President said, referring to injured servicemen he’s visited at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. “For people to disrespect that by kneeling during the playing of our National Anthem I think is disgraceful.”

Trump isn’t alone: a recent survey by Remington Research Group showed that 64 percent of voters want athletes to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Also discovered was that 80 percent want there to be less politics in sports. Fifty-one percent are watching less football, and 69 percent of those cite the NFL’s political activism as the primary reason.

Here’s a crazy suggestion: maybe football players and the National Football League should just focus on playing football.
