The attack unfolded Sunday afternoon, as commuters and tourists were crowding the Marseille station. According to witnesses, a man, brandishing a large knife, screamed “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great” in Arabic) before ambushing passengers, and stabbing at several women.

French army officers, patrolling the station, quickly surrounded the attacker, and shot and killed him.

Authorities say “two victims have been stabbed to death,” and an unknown number were injured.

French authorities say the attack was likely terror-related, and French Interior minister Gérard Collomb is on his way to Marseille to help sort out the situation. Police have completely cordonoed off the train station, and authorities released a statement on Twitter asking people to stay away from the transportation hub until they complete their investigation.

The attack comes less than two weeks after four American college students, on a summer abroad trip to France, were accosted by a woman in the same train station and splashed with acid.

All four of the women sustained injuries, and two required extended treatment for acid burns. French authorities claimed that attack was was not terror related, and that the woman who threw the acid was known to authorities for having mental health issues.
