Trump Calls For Unity to Protect Democracy Amid Russia Indictments.

“Russia started their anti-US campaign in 2014, long before I announced that I would run for President.”

As 13 Russian nationals and three Russian organizations were indicted on claims that they attempted to subvert democracy and influence the 2016 presidential election, President Donald Trump put out a call for unity and pointed out that those charged allegedly started their efforts long before he declared that he was running for president.

As The New York Times reports, those under the indictment are said to have been involved in fraud, identity theft and more since 2014, all in an attempt to sway the 2016 vote:

In a 37-page indictment filed in United States District Court, Mr. Mueller said that the 13 individuals have conspired since 2014 to violate laws that prohibit foreigners from spending money to influence federal elections in the United States.

Among the claims made is that the Russians tried to pose as ordinary Americans to circumvent laws against foreign interference in elections:

“The nature of the scheme was the defendants took extraordinary steps to make it appear that they were ordinary American political activists,” Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general overseeing Mr. Mueller’s inquiry, said in a brief news conference on Friday afternoon at the Justice Department.

President Trump was quick to Twitter to point out that the activities described pre-date his candidacy:

In a statement issued by the White House, President Trump said it is important for Americans to come together:

“We cannot allow those seeking to sow confusion, discord, and rancor to be successful. It’s time we stop the outlandish partisan attacks, wild and false allegations, and far-fetched theories, which only serve to further the agendas of bad actors, like Russia, and do nothing to protect the principles of our institutions. We must unite as Americans to protect the integrity of our democracy and our elections,” President Trump said.

So far the Russians indicted today are the only ones charged by Robert Mueller’s team with trying to influence the election. Michael Flynn is charged with lying to the FBI over an issue that was not a crime and Paul Manafort faces charges related to his business dealings prior to his time as an advisor to the president.
