Refugees In ‘Caravan’ Climb U.S.-Mexico Border Fence, Chant ‘Yes We Can!’

More than 200 refugees from Central America who have moved in a caravan across Mexico have gathered at the U.S. border in Tijuana, with some scaling the border fence and taunting U.S. officials while shouting “Gracias, Mexico!”

In a nod to former president Barack Obama, dozens also chanted “Si Se Puede!” (Yes We Can!) from atop the fence.

The caravan started out with some 1,500 refugees from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, and the hundreds that have reached the U.S. border plan to apply for asylum in the U.S. Pro-immigration groups have dispatched lawyers to Tijuana to help instruct the refugees on how to get into the country.

Mexico has allowed the refugees to move unimpeded through the country, which prompted their gratitude.

Arizona Republic reporter Daniel Gonzalez said the border is at “capacity.”

Some refugees illegally crossed into the United States, federal officials said on Saturday.

“A pregnant woman and some children as young as 4 were detected entering the U.S. through a canyon,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

In a statement issued Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not say those who entered illegally were part of the caravan, only that they were “people associated with” the caravan. It’s unclear what that meant.

President Trump has declared that the caravan will not be allowed in. “I have instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security not to let these large Caravans of people into our Country,” Trump tweeted Monday morning. “It’s a disgrace. We are the only Country in the World so Naive! WALL”.
