BREAKING: Senate Intel Committee Employee Charged In Media Leaks Investigation.

Law enforcement officials arrested former security director for the Senate Intelligence Committee James Wolfe on Thursday for allegedly lying to federal agents in the FBI’s investigation into illegal leaks to the media.

A federal grand jury indicted the 58-year-old “on three counts of making false statements in December about contacts with reporters, including providing sensitive information related to the work of the Senate Intelligence Committee, which he served as security director for 29 years,” NBC News reported.

Wolfe’s arrest came a day after the Senate authorized the Senate Intelligence Committee to cooperate with the DOJ and their request for “records pertinent to a pending investigation arising out of allegations of the unauthorized disclosure of information by a former employee of the Committee,” according to a statement made by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for the congressional record on Wednesday.

Fox News added:

Prosecutors said Wolfe lied to the FBI in December 2017 about contacts he had with three reporters. Prosecutors say he also lied about giving two reporters non-public information about committee matters.

Earlier Thursday, the New York Times revealed that federal investigators had seized years’ worth of email and phone records relating to one of its reporters, Ali Watkins. She previously had a three-year romantic relationship with Wolfe, the Times reported, adding that the records covered a period of time before she joined the paper.

Wolfe is expected to appear in a Maryland federal court on Friday.
