Here’s What Trump-Kim Jong Un Agreed Upon At Summit.

President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took steps toward decreasing tensions on the Korean peninsula, in a joint statement signed by the two leaders Tuesday.

The text of the agreement was seen by reporters before its official release by the White House after Trump held it up during a joint signing ceremony with Kim Jong Un. The text of the agreement notes first that “the United States and the DPRK commit to establish new US-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.”

The text also indicates that Trump gave security guarantees to the North Korean regime in exchange for taking concrete steps towards denuclearization. Most consequentially North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed onto a pledge to “work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

Trump and Kim also committed to holding future meetings between their two countries “led by the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and a relevant high-level DPRK official, at the earliest possible date, to implement the outcomes of the US-DPRK summit.”

“Chairman Kim and I just signed a joint statement in which he reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. We also agreed to vigorous negotiations to implement the agreement as soon as possible and he wants to do that,” Trump said at a press conference, adding that North Korea will destroy a major missile testing site as an outside gesture of good faith.

Trump expressed major optimism at the signing ceremony, saying, “We are very proud of what took place today. I think our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean peninsula is going to be a very much different situation than it has in the past,” adding “people are going to be very impressed, people are going to be very happy, and we are going to take care of a very big and very dangerous problem for the world.”

The president also noted he would “absolutely” invite Kim Jong Un to the White House. Kim Jong Un also told reporters “today, we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document,” adding “The world will see a major change.”
