Serena Williams is ‘ready to gear up and get prepped for New York’ at the inaugural Top Seed Open in Kentucky, says tournament director Jon Sanders.

Women’s tennis will resume at the beginning of August following the five-month enforced break and the Top Seed Open was a last-minute addition to the WTA Tour calendar.

The WTA International event received a big boost as 23-time Grand Slam winner Williams “reached out” about playing in Lexington.

Top Seed Open tournament director Jon Sanders says the American is ready to return to action.

“We’re super excited, looking forward to Serena’s participation,” Sanders told ESPN. “This is a great opportunity.”

He added: “Serena is anxious to get back on court and play. Her people told us she is ready to gear up and get prepped for New York. She reached out to us about playing, and we chatted, and it ended up being a great relationship.”

Several tournaments were cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the WTA calendar was initially only had the Western & Southern Open as a warm-up event for the US Open.

However, the Top Seed Open organisers came to the party and the event will now be staged from 10-16 August.

“The WTA asked if I had interest [in promoting the tournament] and I said we’d do our best,” Sanders said. “Lo and behold, here we are, ramping up and getting ready to go.”
