John Krasinski Makes an Impressive Captain America in This Convincing Deepfake

image

  • John Krasinski auditioned for the role of Captain America before Chris Evans eventually landed the role.
  • A YouTube channel posted a video giving fans a glimpse at how Krasinski might’ve looked wearing the Captain America costume.
  • Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, received the same treatment in another video.

Fans of John Krasinski know and love him for his years of playing Jim Halpert on The Office. But what they might not remember is that he once auditioned for the role of Captain America (and got pretty far in the process!), only to lose out to none other than Marvel icon Chris Evans.

But what if fans had the chance to see how Krasinski would’ve fared if he were the one to don the iconic suit and shield? Well, thanks to some impressive video skills, now they can.

Shamook, a YouTube channel known known for taking popular actors and inserting their faces onto the bodies of memorable/beloved movie characters, used deepfake technology to create a side-by-side video featuring the Quiet Place star’s good-looking complexion superimposed onto the body of the Marvel superhero for some key scenes within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s a little disconcerting to see the dorky Jim Halpert donning the costume we’ve seen so many times (and in so many memorable fight/battle scenes). But once you get past that initial shock, it’s actually pretty fascinating to see how Krasinski’s version of The First Avenger might’ve looked had he won the role all those years ago.

He’s not the only member of his family to receive the hypothetical Marvel treatment from the Deepfake technology. The YouTube channel did something very similar with Scarlett Johansson’s likeness as the Black Widow. But the face superimposed was another woman who won the role originally for Iron Man 2: Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, who had to back out of the franchise in 2010 star in Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black.

But back to Krasinski for a second. Here’s some food for thought: had he portrayed Captain Steve Rogers, would we have gotten him in any other major projects, such as the Jack Ryan series or A Quiet Place? Probably not, given how frequently Captain America is featured in both the Avengers series and his own standalone films. But not definitely not, considering the fact that Evans has had time to appear in a few choice projects of his own—Knives Out, Snowpiercer, the 2017 film Gifted, and the Apple TV+ series Defending Jacob, among others.

But it looks like Krasinski isn’t sweating the loss, as he knows Marvel made the best decision with choosing Evans for the role. “People have a sense that some of us are insanely competitive,” he told Esquire in a February 2020 story. “I’ve known Chris forever. As soon as they said Chris Evans got the part, I was like, yeah, look at that guy, Are you kidding me? He is Captain America.”

Well, now have some sort of an idea of what his Captain America could have been.
