This Guy Found All of the Hidden Ghosts in the Background of The Haunting of Bly Manor

The Haunting of Bly Manor, the latest standalone instalment in Mike Flanagan’s series of ghost stories on Netflix, has a lot in common with its predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House. That series was loosely inspired by the Gothic works of Shirley Jackson, this one is similarly a mashup of the writings of Henry James. Additionally, several cast members return in different roles, including Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Henry Thomas.

But the key stylistic similarity between Hill House and Bly Manor, and the one for which eagle-eyed fans were most on the edges of their seats, is the background ghosts.

When Hill House dropped on Netflix in 2018, it became a show that many viewers rewatched—not just to see how its many twists and reveals stood up, but because showrunner Flanagan had planted ghosts in the deep background of multiple shots in the series. These spectral, deepy creepy figures stood incredibly still and watched the main characters interacting in the foreground, often going unnoticed. But when you did see them… chills.

Flanagan hinted that there may be some similarly hidden spooks lurking in the halls of Bly Manor, and now Paul from the Heavy Spoilers channel on YouTube believes he has found them all. You’ll probably have noticed some of them yourself—the Plague Doctor’s distinctive costume is pretty hard to miss—but others are very well obscured. Check them out for yourself in the video below. And while it’s probably needless to say at this point: spoilers follow.
