Temuera Morrison, as Boba Fett, Should Look Familiar to The Mandalorian Fans

Star Wars fans got to see something they’ve been waiting decades for in The Mandalorian‘s Season 2 episode “The Tragedy,” which marked the first real appearance of Boba Fett since George Lucas’ original trilogy. Those same fans might in turn be wondering who that is playing an older, grizzled version of the legendary intergalactic bounty hunter, and the answer is one that makes a lot of sense: Temuera Morrison.

For years, there’s been talk of reviving the Boba Fett character. At one point, Michael Fassbender was even rumored to play him in a spin-off movie (maybe because he’s used to wearing a similar helmet as Magneto in the X-Men movies?). But The Mandalorian made the right choice in casting Morrison as Boba, because he’s really the only one who would make any sense in the Star Wars world. That’s because Morrison has been in the Star Wars world before—and in a big role that you certainly remember.

Morrison made his first appearance in the Star Wars lore when he played Jango Fett, a bounty hunter, in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Jango was cloned in that film, and had a son of his own that we met: Boba Fett. Given that Boba Fett was a clone of Jango, it makes perfect sense that an older version of Boba—the masked character we met in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi—would look exactly like an older version of Jango.

This marks a pretty big moment for The Mandalorian. While we’ve already seen plenty of comedians in The Mandalorian, along with scary villains and previously animated fan favorites, this marks the first legitimate character tie-in with any of the Star Wars movies. It’s an interesting precedent to set with two episodes left and the possibility of a new Jedi character looking for Baby Yoda/Grogu. Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, anyone?

But we digress. Back to the main point—Morrison crushes it in “The Tragedy.” He looks just as grizzled and worn as someone who was stuck in a sarlacc pit and had his armor stolen would, but he’s stern in his ways and when it comes time to kick some stormtrooper ass, he kicks some stormtrooper ass. And if you didn’t get chills when Boba showed up, armor on…are you even a Star Wars fan? That was without a doubt one of the most badass sequences in all of The Mandalorian.

Once the armor comes on, it does kind of have a little bit of a “Mr. Incredible trying to fit into his superhero suit” type of feel, but it doesn’t matter because the action is so good.

Luckily, Jon Favreau and company made the decision—we think—to keep Morrison as Boba around for the next few episodes. He’s got his armor back, and he told Mando that he and Fennec Shand are committed to ensuring the safe return of Grogu.

That’s good with us. We’re ready for more Boba Fett. We haven’t seen him since 1983—that’s 37 years—and somehow, magically, this new version just feels right.
