Last week, Glenn vocally denounced the Senate’s partisan passage of the so-called ‘nuclear option’ because it undoes nearly 225 years of precedent. On radio this morning, Glenn played damning audio of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) circa 2008, in which he promises the nuclear option would never be implemented under his leadership.
During a 2008 interview with Tom Daschle, Sen. Reid had this to say about the elimination of the filibuster:
“How do you go back,” Pat asked. “I mean despicable dirt bag. Just despicable. [He has] no conviction whatsoever. Whatever is politically expedient for him at any given moment, that’s what he’s for. As convicted as he sounds in this, he went back on all of that and did the exact opposite.”
While Pat and Stu argued that Sen. Reid has blatantly gone back on his word, Glenn questioned whether or not Sen. Reid is really even in control of the Senate anymore. His increasingly erratic behavior would indicate he may very well just be taking orders.
“I don’t know who the leader is, but the leader is the one that has him by the nose. Either that, or he’s gone senile,” Glenn said. “And it could be a combination of the two.”
The vote ultimately showed the lack of principled leaders we have in Washington D.C. With few exceptions, most Democrats were against the option in 2005 and for it this time around. Similarly, the majority of Republicans were for the nuclear option in 2005 and against it last week.
“This is what happens when you have politicians that don’t have principles,” Stu said. “If you have someone who has principles – by the way we pointed this out on Pat and Stu last week, Carl Levin a Democrat [from Michigan] voted against it both times.”
“That’s what America is hungry for,” Glenn said emphatically. “That’s why, quite honestly, Ted Cruz and Mike Lee win in the end. They win in the end. They may not be able to save the republic, but they win in the end because people are hungry for somebody to stand up for principle. We are not going to agree with everything everybody says. We’re not going to agree a hundred percent with anybody, no matter who they are. However, I just want to vote for somebody who actually says what they mean and means what they say. And Harry Reid clearly does not. Dangerous man. Really dangerous man because he’s beyond unpegged from principles.”
