The Lie That Israel Targets Civilians

SHAPIRO: The Lie That Israel Targets Civilians

Today, the White House condemned Israel for “shelling of a UNRWA school in Gaza, which reportedly killed and injured innocent Palestinians – including children – and UN humanitarian workers.” The White House went on to condemn “those responsible for hiding weapons in United Nations facilities in Gaza.”

Meanwhile, Joe Scarborough, the former Republican Congressman who masquerades as a conservative for pay on MSNBC, condemned Israel wholeheartedly, stating in full anti-Semitic fervor, “This is asinine. This continued killing of women and children in a way that appears to be indiscriminate is asinine.” Piers Morgan, formerly of CNN and now of the unemployment line, tweeted in similar fashion: “Israel’s making a massive mistake with this monstrous child-slaughtering military strategy. Someone needs to rein @netanyahu in… fast.”

First off, only anti-Semitism or generalized Western self-loathing can explain the White House’s continued attempts to draw moral equivalence between those who hide and fire rockets from behind children with those attempting to defend themselves from such rockets. Both Jewish and Arab civilian casualties are solely the fault of those who use Arab human shields while attempting to kill Jewish civilians.

Secondly, Scarborough’s ridiculous assertion that Israel is “indiscriminate” mirrors the worst anti-Semitic propaganda of Hamas. Morgan’s tweet is simple modernized blood libel: the notion that Jews are involved in a “monstrous child-slaughtering military strategy” is a hairsbreadth from Jews killing children for matzah.

Fact: Israel could level Gaza if it sought to indiscriminately kill civilians. If Benjamin Netanyahu were Bill Clinton, he wouldn’t be risking Jewish lives to save civilians — he’d be bombing from 30,000 feet, as Clinton did in Bosnia, with major damage to the civilian population. Clinton wasn’t genocidal, and he wasn’t indiscriminately killing civilians. Israel is exponentially more “pinpoint” in its operations in Gaza than Clinton was in Bosnia. That’s because Israel cares about Arab civilians more than Hamas does.

Obama himself has defended civilian casualties as the price of saving civilians while defending his drone campaign, stating, “the terrorists we are after target civilians, and the death toll from their acts of terrorism against Muslims dwarfs any estimate of civilian casualties from drone strikes.” Yet somehow, that logic goes out the window with regard to Israel.

Then again, so does all logic when it comes to the left’s peculiar hatred for those troublesome Jews who insist on defending themselves
