If anyone should know the answer as to whether America is being led down the wrong path its William J. Murray, “son of former atheist apologist Madelyn O’Hair.” O’Hair was the founder of American Atheists and the organization’s president from 1963 to 1986.O’Hair is best known for being a plaintiff in the landmark case of Murray v Curlett, the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ended prayer in American public schools in 1963.
I interviewed Murray recently on my radio show Stand For Truth Radio and asked him what life was like being raised by a Marxist parent. We also discussed his new book.
Murray is the Chairman of the Religious Freedom Coalition in Washington, D.C. and author of the book “Utopian Road To Hell: Elitists Enslaving The World With Central Planning.”
I was curious to know how Murray escaped falling into the trap of socialism which many millennials today are seemingly embracing. More and more millennials are putting their support behind Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders and his bid for the White House.
While socialism once conjured up negative images of dictators, many of whom were responsible for mass murders of unwilling supporters, today for millennials at least, socialism is viewed as a positive ideology influenced in large part by Sanders.
Sanders, according to Murray, uses the “democratic socialism” model of Denmark and tries to compare it to the very different model of the United States.
“Denmark has about five million people which is fewer than the city of New York. Denmark’s model is based on well-educated people, high-tech industries and farming with one of the lowest corporate income taxes that allows them to compete world-wide with their products,” Murray said.
Essentially, Sanders is comparing apples to oranges when assessing the two countries. The models are so different that there really isn’t a comparison to be made.
Murray describes Sanders’ democratic socialism as more akin to “managed capitalism” because money from corporate taxes is needed to carry out these social programs.
Apparently, none of this matters to Sanders’ supporters or they haven’t taken the time to do their homework. Many may have heard Sanders definition of democratic socialism and believe it to be financially beneficial to the collective.
“Let me define for you…what democratic socialism means to me. It builds on what Franklin Delano Roosevelt said when he fought for guaranteed economic rights for all Americans,” Sanders explained recently to a crowd of supporters at Georgetown University.
What Sanders forgot to mention and what Murray points out is that democratic socialism, while perhaps sounding “perfect” to Sanders’ supporters, also has a very dark side to it.
“Everyone who has ever come up with these utopian schemes has wound up killing millions of people. It was all going to be voluntary, they were going to convince the people this is what they needed but they couldn’t and they always turned violent…it wound up being mass slaughter,” Murray said.
Someone should remind those who recently participated in a poll of progressives of this fact.
The poll found that “By a 30 point margin, a majority of Democrats polled believe socialism has a positive impact on society.” Additionally, the poll found that 40 percent agree more with socialism while 25 percent agree with capitalism; 47 percent favor a government-run healthcare system while 39 percent favor a private health system; and 67 percent say the media should prove they are not biased against the content of a campus rally on racial equality before covering it.”
Are these millennials and older Sanders’ supporters just “Utopian dreamers” in a world, which under Sanders and quite possibly Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, would be governed by central planning elitists who will assert their will on constituents to convince them that democratic socialism is exactly what they need?
What would it take to wake these dreamers out of their slumber before they find themselves enslaved and on a “Utopian Road To Hell?”
Perhaps Murray’s own personal experience provides the best answer.
“My eyes began to open to the evils of central government when I received my first paycheck and saw the amount of tax removed to support others who cannot or will not work,” Murray said.
