Republican nominee Donald Trump is in hot water for his call for Russia to release Clinton’s deleted emails, but top Democratic donors announced two separate bounties for Trump’s tax forms.
Democrats united against Trump during the third night of the DNC Wednesday. Each speaker mentioned Trump’s taxes, and former Virginia Governor Tim Kaine made fun of Trump by impersonating him, saying, “There’s nothing suspicious in my tax returns, believe me.”
Top Clinton fundraiser Moishe Mana offered to give $1 million to charity, and an unnamed donor teamed up with Clinton ally David Brock to make a $5 million reward for the tax documents.
“Through his financial documents, we are trying to break into the image that he’s portraying to the American people,” Mana told the Associated Press. “He says he’s a successful businessman who wants to do for the country what he did for his company. Well, go ahead, show me the money.”
If Trump is elected president, Mana asks, “how much in debt would we be to other countries? This is about the security of the United States. We have the right to make sure he’s not in debt to other countries.”
Former Republican nominee Mitt Romney first raised the issue of Trump’s tax returns during the Republican primary. In the 2012 race, Romney himself waited until September to release his returns, which showed the nominee paid an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent.
Trump told Meet The Press last week that Romney’s tax documents were “a tiny peanut compared to mine.” Trump added that there was no controversy in Romney’s returns, but the media still “made him look bad, In fact, I think he lost his election because of that.”
