American Muslim leaders are looking to register an unprecedented one million Muslims in a coordinated campaign against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. What better way to assuage peopleâs fears about ideologically homogenous Muslims than assembling an army of voters against the man that has ridden the waves of anti-Islam sentiment to the top of the polls?
Proportionally speaking, the United States has far fewer Muslims living within its borders than Europe. But Islamic clerics and faith leaders hope to make the most of their numbers, setting the goal of registering nearly a third of the countryâs 3.3 million Muslims for the election in November. Community organizers are arguing that Muslims are disproportionately represented in key swing states like Florida and Virginia, rendering their vote pivotal.
âImams have been asked to encourage their congregations to register to vote,â reports Reuters. âOrganizers have sent canvassers to college campuses, bus stations and gas stations in Muslim neighborhoods.â
Unsurprisingly, the controversial Muslim advocacy group, the Council on Islamic-American Relations, or CAIR, is largely behind the get-out-to-vote effort. Â As The Daily Wire reported, CAIR is listed as a terrorist group by a wide array of foreign governments, including many Arab governments. Specifically, CAIR is accused of being an offshoot of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.
Hamas âindirectly created CAIR and the two groups remain tight,â according to National Review. âIn 1994, CAIR head Nihad Awad publicly declared his support for Hamas; the Holy Land Foundation (HLF), a Hamas front group, contributed $5,000 to CAIR; in turn, CAIR exploited the 9/11 attacks to raise money for HLF; and, this past August, demonstrators at a CAIR-sponsored rally in Florida proclaimed âWe are Hamas!ââ
Moreover, CAIR has consistently promoted censorship against human rights activists, womenâs rights advocates, and liberal Islamic reformers. It was only a matter of time before they came after the free press in the United States.
Now the Islamic lobbying group has set its sights on Election 2016. According to Nihad Awad, the executive director of CAIR, the lobbying group has helped register 300,000 Muslims since last November. Many of them live in swing states.
Under the grievance of âIslamophobia,â Awad hopes to install Islamophilic candidates like Hillary Clinton in public office. âAwad said anti-Muslim sentiment had grown since the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, last year that authorities have said was inspired by Islamist militants, and due to comments by Trump,â explains Reuters.
If Obama has his way and welcomes in thousands more refugees from predominantly Islamic countries, then the voting bloc may very well exercise immense control in national elections for years to come.
