Reds call up top prospect Noelvi Marte in chase for rare division title

The Reds add another young weapon to their roster as they chase their first division title win in more than a decade.

According to ESPN, the team has called up top prospect Noelvi Marte, 21, who was acquired last year in a deal that sent pitcher Luis Castillo packing to the Mariners.

The 6-foot, 220-pound shortstop and third baseman has a slash line of .279/.358/.454 across Double-A and Triple-A and has tallied 18 stolen bases and 11 home runs this year.

The Reds (64-60) are tied with the Cubs (63-59) for the National League wild-card spot and both teams sit just three games behind the defending NL Central champion Brewers.

Cincinnati last won a division title in 2012.

While Marte, who made a pinch-running appearance in the Reds’ 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday, has held his own in the minors, he will have to fight hard to impress in Cincinnati.

The Reds have many rookie players like Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand as part of their core.

McLain and Steer entered Saturday leading the team in OPS with .878 and .813, respectively.

Since arriving in Triple-A Louisville, Marte has almost exclusively played third base and recorded 16 extra-base hits.

He’s recorded 56 homers and 238 RBIs in 379 minor league games since 2019.
