Extinction Rebellion: Officers arrive at Hyde Park to police protest to protect the bees

Dozens of police cars and riot squad officers have been staking out Hyde Park in Sydney ahead of a planned protest to protect the bees.

Extinction Rebellion protesters are holding a ‘bee themed die-in’ on Tuesday, encouraging people to do their part in saving the dying species.

The protest ran until 11am and is one of dozens of similar protests held by the group happening around Australia this week. 

Environmental activists plan to block major intersections, march nude and use bikes to disrupt traffic during a week of protests throughout the nation as part of the global Extinction Rebellion movement.

Police have been put on notice and are on high alert. Each of the planned protests will be met with a heavy police presence, as seen in Hyde Park this morning.

A spokeswoman from NSW Police couldn’t tell Daily Mail Australia exactly how many officers were manning the peaceful protest of the bees.

But they said ‘an appropriate amount of resources have been directed to the area’. 

The group’s leaders said the bee protest was significant in helping to save the planet and they were hoping for a significant turn out.

More than 1,200 people registered their interest in attending the protest, but it is not yet clear how many people actually turned out.

‘Bees pollinate our crops and are crucial to our food production and food security,’ the event details read.

‘But the Climate Emergency, with its associated hotter and drier conditions and extreme weather events – is putting pressure on our pollinators and the beekeepers that look after them.

‘This pressure will in turn impact people’s ability to reliably produce enough food. The threat is real and can no longer be ignored.’

They also asked attendees to come dressed as honeybees or to wear beekeeping suits.

A ‘costume guide’ was also shared on the page giving people tips on creating cheap and effective costumes using pipe cleaners and pom poms.
