This is the last weekend that anyone who opposes Florida’s common core based standards will have an opportunity to comment on the standards. Comments will close on Oct. 31st. As it stands now COMMON CORE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN FLORIDA unless it can be stopped. Governor Scott had ordered that the Florida Dept. of Education (FDOE) seek public opinion on the common core standards and that they be taken into account. Three hearings were already held but Governor Scott also ordered that public comments on be allowed on a public forum at http://flstandards.org/. If we do not comment on this forum than it will be assumed that we are OK with common core.
If you are not OK with common core make your objections now.
Numbers count, as this will be considered like a vote. It is very possible that groups that receive millions to promote common core, like Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education (FEE), may already have paid people to comment numerous times in favor of common core. Rest assured that someone who creates the phony “Conservatives for Higher Standards” so he can run pro common core advertisements, would not try to stuff pro common core comments into a public forum.
Please take the time to leave comments on the http://flstandards.org/ website. The attached Documents are from a Florida Stop Common Core Coalition Website. They are comments from two of the nation’s top experts on educational standards. Use them for help when commenting on the standards. Sandra Stotsky prepared the Comments on Florida ELA Common Core Standards and Ze’ev Wurman prepared the Comments on FL Math Common Core Standards.
I have attached the PDF files and a document about the review process from the FDOC. I also the comment PDFs as MS word documents, so you can use the comments but I suggest that you add the words “I oppose this because: ….” because they may simply scan the comments for the words “oppose” or “approve”.
It will take about an hour to do both the ELA and Math standards using the expert’s comments as templates. Not all the standards were commented on by Sandra Stotsky and Ze’ev Wurman but they are in order. You can go back in if you do not finish, just be sure to lick the SAVE COMMENTS button after each standard section is completed.
