Republican Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar criticized the Biden administration Wednesday morning for relying excessively on third world mines while over regulating essential minerals in the United States.
In January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) limited the development of a mine in Alaska due to worries over the impact on local salmon population, despite it being one of the largest available deposits of copper and gold.
âPebble Mine for example contains an estimated $400B worth of critical minerals which are essential to our economy and [research and development]. Just think about how many jobs were lost and livelihoods effected,â Gosar said. The Pebble Mine decision came a year after Bidenâs Interior Department canceled copper mine leases held by Twin Metals in Minnesota due to regulatory violations.

In a 2022 White House press statement, the Biden administration noted the United Statesâ increasing dependency on âforeign sourcesâ for minerals necessary to ânational security and economic prosperityâ as well as household items, such as smartphone batteries.
Gosar voiced his frustration Wednesday, claiming that while âthe EPA worries about the potential problems with salmon in Alaska, unregulated gold mining in the third world poisons 15 million people.â
